SERBIAN MOTIVES
1. A REVERENT JOURNEY TO FRUŠKA GORA
to Alexandre Shevo
His mother was Russian.
His father was Serbian.
He had to be their common tongue
And help them communicate.
He and I, we ascended
Sacred Fruška Gora.
He and I, we wandered
From monastery to monastery.
Along our way he taught me
How to read Serbian books –
Read what is on paper,
Speak what is in mind.
In one monastery we were blessed
With a view of a baby being christened.
In another monastery we were delighted
With a view of a wedding being celebrated.
"In another monastery we'll see
A burial service, I'm afraid", –
Said he, his smile dark,
As he tried to make his breath light.
And then, he and I, we went to
The garden that embraced the churches,
Blue grapes, he and I, we feasted with,
Walnut falls, he and I, we picked up.
"A walnut fall is like a word", –
Explained my communicating friend, –
You feel it with your feet,
Like you feel a proper word with your tongue".
He and I, we descended
Fruška Gora late at an autumn night.
Deep in my bag were chattering
Words of the Walnut dictionary.
"What a wonderful day it was, –
Thought I, at parting, –
I can read Serbian now,
And I can translate from Walnut".
