A MIRROR CARP IN A FISHMONGER'S STALL

A mirror carp is mirroring the ocean
Struggling to gulp with his crimson shell-like gills.
The total oceanic mass, with its dwellers and its ships,
Rests on his mighty body.
Strange beasts in coats and in hats
float past indifferently.
He fights to swim away
To speed away
To where big white fish slide.
He will become a cloud carp
Or one of those leaves
Which
Languidly spin
In endless
Slow dance
But as a leaf, he will be
White
Violet
Or lavender.
He will become
What he wants to become.
He will swim
In the blue
In the cool
In the deep
In the pure.

1.

ON FISH

1.
Fish don't hike in the mountains.
They don't walk in the fields.
Their grassy meadows lie under water columns.
Glassy weight lies on their backs.
Fish swim among stars
Fat as tulip bulbs
Drunk on moonlight,
On the verge of sprouting into the waterglass.
Fish have tales to tell, of galaxies, of asteroids
Prowling like predacious wasps in unresponsive space,
Of ships which have become a part of the fish world
Where, ripped from wilted bodies, souls float through the horizon
Into the ocean which has no bounds
To sit on top of the world tree,
Hiding in the coral colonies of its boughs
Like fish with selenite eyes,
With scales a swarm of icicles
Reflecting the radiance of the sky.

2.
Fish talk about all things quietly
With their eyes, scales, fins,
Moving their lips to mislead the curious.
They have no grasp of shape-shifting words.
Fish are truthful.

LAO TZU'S BLACK BULL

A black bull with a big head
Horns splayed over the earth like a wide new moon
Walks on the road
Flares his nostrils
Breathes in the smell of grasses and the hot sun.

A bull
With road-absorbing eyes.

A dragonfly lands on the tip of one horn.
His ghostly-blue wings are smoothing out the icefloe of the sky.

A white flower by the side of the road is fishing for clouds.

An old master of the Tao named Lao Tzu
He who abandoned the chrysalis of his former body
Rocks on the ample back of the bull
Like a boat rocking in ocean waves.

Lao Tzu
Replete with crystalline astral reality
And the bull
Mellowed out by the sun
Fill the road.

THE DELTA

In the thickets of my soul, gray geese are crying.
Lotus blossoms are plucked.
Long stalks are falling
With the thin clinking of cracking ice shards.
In the far-off pools, somber fish
Stay motionless, expectant.
I flow into the waters where the moon,
Cracked into two, dives in
Like a lemon wedge.
