Шут! Шут! Тут шут!
Шута поймали!
–«Пошути, шут! По шутовству соскучились!
Посмеши, шут! По смеху стосковались!
Тащите сюда всех царевен– несмеян!
Тащите сюда всех зарёванных царевен!
Шут! Шут! Шут!»
А тот стоит весь бледный
И губы у него трясутся.
JESTER

A jester! A jester! A jester's here!
They caught a jester!
"Jester, make a joke! We're longing for jokes!
Jester, make us laugh! We're yearning for laughter!
Bring here all the laughless princesses!
Bring here all the tearful princesses!
Jester! Jester! Jester!"
Yet, he stands there pale-faced,
His lips trembling.

Раздвинулись
распались облака
раскрылось небо
вышел светлый ангел
приблизился
и что-то мне сказал
– погромче! – попросил я –
чуть погромче! –
но он не повторил свои слова
и удалился
и снова сдвинулись
сплотились облака
закрылось небо
что он сказал мне
этот странный ангел?
и почему он говорил так тихо –
почти шепотом?

The clouds parted
the clouds fell apart
the sky unfolded
a bright angel appeared
came near
and told me something
"speak up!" I said
"just a little louder, please!"
but he departed
without repeating his words
and the clouds closed
came back together
and covered up the sky
what did he tell me
this strange angel?
and why was his voice so low,
almost a whisper?
ВАРИАЦИЯ НА ТЕМУ ПЕЧАЛИ

Печально я гляжу на настоящее
хотя многие, глядя на него,
просто умирают от смеха
печально я гляжу в будущее
хотя многие ждут его
как манны небесной
и на прошлое я поглядываю с печалью
хотя многие поминают его
только добром
ишь какой печальный нашелся! –
говорят обо мне многие –
выкинуть его из настоящего!
не пускать его в будущее!
отнять у него все прошлое!
пусть болтается
вне времени и пространства!
я слушаю и не обижаюсь:
многим ведь печаль недоступна
и они сердятся
VARIATIONS ON SADNESS

I look at the present with sadness
while many think it is
simply hilarious to look at
I look into the future with sadness
while many await it
like manna from heaven
and with sadness I look into the past
while many remember it
only fondly
"look at this melancholic freak!" –
many say nodding at me –
"throw him out of the present!
don't let him into the future!
take all the past from him!
let him hang like this
outside time and space!"
I don't resent them:
many are simply incapable of sadness
and so they get angry
